I tried teaching belly breathing to a group of 5-year-olds with a bubble wand at 10 a.m., and one little coach corrected my pace: “slow like my turtle,” while my students scribbled it down. I love when kids take the lead — what child-led teach-back moment made you laugh and learn at the same time?
And “Slow like my turtle” got me — , my 10 a.m. bubble-wand tries turn into sprint-breathing unless I give one kid a pinwheel and crown them pace-setter. What helps: sticker on the belly (“make the starfish rise”), then 4-in/4-out while the pinwheel just barely spins; if you stick with bubbles, smaller rings slow the breath. Would you let your little coach tap a metronome app so everyone keeps the same turtle beat?
I’ve had better luck at the 10 a.m… wiggle hour by swapping the bubble wand for a $1 sand timer and telling them, “exhale until the sand runs out,” then letting the kid who said “slow like my turtle” flip it for the group. If they start giggling or rushing, I switch to whisper-counts so they can hear their own pace. Do you ever let the little coach pick the count before you demo?
